Comforter in the Bible

Comforter in the Bible

Comforter in the Bible, It is common among Muslims to claim that Muhammad is mentioned in the Holy Bible. In fact, this was first claimed by none other than the author of the Quran itself.  Jerry Thomas refutes one such argument.

It is common among Muslims to claim that Muhammad is mentioned in the Holy Bible. In fact, this was first claimed by none other than the author of the Quran itself.

Surah 61:6 says “And remember, Jesus, the son of Mary, said: `Oh Children of Israel! I am the apostle of God to you…giving glad tidings of an apostle to come after me, whose name shall be AHMAD. But when he came to them with clear signs, they said, `This is clearly sorcery!'”

This has been repeated by Hadiths, Siras, Tafsir’s and modern Dawwah preachers. One of the most often quoted verses are the verses related to the comforter in the Gospel of John.

These points have been extensively discussed in the following articles that appear in Answering Islam:

1) Who is the Comforter? (http://www.answering-islam.org/Silas/comforter.htm)
2) Jesus and Muhammad: Two Prophets for a Lost World (http://www.answering-islam.org/Campbell/s6c1.html#paraclete)
3) Who really is the Paracletos? (http://www.answering-islam.org/Responses/Shabir-Ally/paracletos.htm)
4) The Comforter – Muhammad or Holy Spirit? (http://www.answering-islam.org/Muhammad/Foretold/the_comforter.pdf)

In this article, I will be covering an argument complementary to the articles mentioned in the previous links to answer the question ‘who is the Comforter: Holy Spirit or Muhammad?

Premise 1: According to LORD Jesus, the Comforter in the Bible Comes From God the Father

Let us look at the very words of Jesus to prove this point.

John 14:16-17  And I will pray (to) THE FATHER, and HE will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

John 14: 26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom THE FATHER WILL SEND in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

John 15: 26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you FROM THE FATHER, the Spirit of truth who proceeds FROM THE FATHER, He will testify of Me.”

Premise 2: According to the Quran Muhammad Did Not Come From God the Father

The author of the Quran clearly denied that the Allah who sent Muhammad is the Father. Author of Quran had many misconceptions about the doctrines of the Christian faith. In the following verses from the Quran, you will read about the appalling ignorance of author of the Quran about the meaning of God’s Fatherhood. But what is clear from the following verses is that Allah of the Quran who sent Muhammad is not the Father.

Surah 5:18: The Jews and Christians say: We are sons of Allah and His loved ones. Say: Why then doth He chastise you for your sins? Nay, ye are but mortals of His creating. He forgives whom He will, and chastises whom He will. Allah’s is the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, and unto Him is the journeying.

Surah 9.30 And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah. That is their saying with their mouths. They imitate the saying of those who disbelieved of old. Allah (Himself) fighteth against them. How perverse are they!

Surah 10: 68 “They say: Allah hath taken (unto Him) a son – Glorified be He! He hath no needs! His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. Ye have no warrant for this. Tell ye concerning Allah that which ye know not?”

Surah 17: 111 “And say: Praise be to Allah, Who hath not taken unto Himself a son, and Who hath no partner in the Sovereignty, nor hath He any protecting friend through dependence. And magnify Him with all magnificence.”

Conclusion:

It is very clear from the above verses that the Comforter that LORD Jesus promised was not Muhammad.

If Muslims have to argue that Muhammad is the one whom Jesus promised, they have to accept that Muhammad came from God the Father. However, for Muslims to accept Muhammad came from God the Father is to blaspheme as per the Quran.

If Muslims agree that it is not Muhammad whom Jesus promised but the Holy Spirit, then they make the author of the Quran a liar.

Either way, the empty claims of the Quran traps the Muslims as usual.

However, the Holy Spirit makes us call God as Abba Father.

Romans 8: 14-15 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

Another Point:

Moses called God as the Father.

Deut. 32:6 – Is this the way you repay the LORD, O foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?

It is this God the Father who sends the Prophet like Moses.

Deuteronomy 18.18- “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brethren; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him”.

Muhammad denied that the god who sent Muhammad was the God the Father.

Therefore, it is very clear that this verse is not regarding Muhammad.

However, Jesus said that it was God the Father who sent Him.

John 20:21 so Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

John 3: 16 -17 ““For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

Concluding Note:

It is illogical for Muslims to argue that Muhammad was the prophet like Moses or Muhammad is the comforter whom LORD Jesus promised when the person who sent Muhammad is definitely not God the Father.

Brief Appendix:

It boomerangs on Muslims to misquote verses like John 14: 28 in their vain attempt to disprove the divinity of Jesus. In John 14: 28 Jesus said “If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, I am going to the Father, for my FATHER is greater than I”.

I had shown that this verse in the context (http://www.sakshitimes.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=275&Itemid=43) does not deny the divinity rather establishes it.

However, this verse disproves that LORD Jesus was not a Muslim like how Muslims usually claim since He address God the Father as Father. Also, these kind of verses prove that Muhammad can never be a true prophet as he contradicted and denied what Prophet Moses and LORD Jesus taught.
