   According to the Bible, God said to Moses, on whom be peace:

   “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.” (The Holy Bible, New International Version, Deuteronomy chapter 18, verse 18).

   The prophet described in the above verse must have the following three characteristics:

   1. He will be like Moses.
   2. He will come from the brothers of the Israelites, i.e. the Ishmaelites.
   3. God will put His words in the mouth of that prophet and he will declare what God commanded him.

   Let us see which prophet God was speaking of.

   1. The prophet like Moses

   Some people feel that this prophecy refers to the prophet Jesus, on whom be peace. But, although Jesus* was truly a prophet of God, he is not the prophet spoken of here. He was born miraculously, and, finally, God raised him up miraculously. On the other hand, Muhammad* is more like Moses*; both were born in a natural way and both died natural deaths.

   2. From among the Ishmaelites

   Abraham* had two sons, Ishmael* and Isaac* (Genesis, chapter 21). Ishmael* became the grandfather of the Arab nation, and Isaac became the grandfather of the Jewish nation. The prophet spoken of was to come not from among the Jews themselves, but from among their brothers, the Ishmaelites. Muhammad*, a descendant of Ishmael, is indeed that prophet.

   3. God will put His words in his mouth

   “Neither the content of the revelation, nor its form, were of Mohammed’s devising. Both were given by the angel, and Mohammed’s task was only to repeat what he heard.”(World Religions from Ancient History to the Present, by Geoffrey Parrinder, p. 472)

   God sent the angel Gabriel* to teach Muhammad* the exact words that he should repeat to the people. The words are therefore not his own; they did not come from his own thoughts, but were put into his mouth by the angel. These are written down in the Qur’an, word for word exactly as they came from God.

   Now that we know that prophet we must listen to him, for, according to the Bible, God says: “I will punish anyone who refuses to obey him” (Good News Bible, Deut. 18:19).

   * on whom be peace

   Jesus(pbuh) said to the Jews:

   “Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. (From the KJV Bible, Matthew 21:43)”

   ^The above verse indicates that the “Kingdom of God” would’ve been taken away from the Jews.

   And then God says:

   “And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. (From the KJV Bible, Genesis 17:19-21)”

   At this point, we know that the Prophet has to be an Arab and can come from either Isaac(pbuh) or Ishmael(pbuh), since both are breathrin to one another. So we need to narrow it down to find out who this Prophesised Prophet(pbuh) really is.

   The part of the verse that says ““I will raise up for them a prophet like you”, refers to the fact that the Prophet will resemble that of Moses(pbuh).

   The Muslims believe this is referring to Muhammad(pbuh), however some Christians believe this is referring to Jesus(pbuh). We will see the comparison and draw the conclusions.

   This is why we believe the verse is referring to the comming of Muhammad(pbuh) –

   i) Both had a father and a mother, while Jesus (pbuh) was born miraculously without any male intervention.

   [Mathew 1:18 and Luke 1:35 and also Al-Qur’an 3:42-47]

   ii) Both were married and had children. Jesus (pbuh) according to the Bible did not marry nor had children.

   iii) Both died natural deaths. Jesus (pbuh) has been raised up alive. (4:157-158)

   iv) Both besides being Prophets were also kings i.e. they could inflict capital punishment. Jesus (pbuh) said, “My kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36).

   v) Both were accepted as Prophets by their people in their lifetime but Jesus (pbuh) was rejected by his
   people. John chapter 1 verse 11 states, “He came unto his own, but his own received him not.”

   iv) Both brought new laws and new regulations for their people. Jesus (pbuh) according to the Bible did not bring any new laws. (Mathew 5:17-18).

   We can conclude from above that it could not have been a Prophet from the Jews, as the only prophet that came was Jesus(pbuh) and when we compare him to the descendant of Ishmael who is Muhammad(pbuh), we find that the latter has far more similarities to Moses(pbuh). Thus the prophesised Prophet is Muhammad(pbuh).
