Christian missionaries are vital to conserving endangered languages, writes Laura Spinney in More Intelligent Life, a quarterly magazine from the Economist.
In 1963 Barbara and Joseph Grimes sat down with their Huichol neighbours to discuss what to do about the bandits terrorising their remote community. It was clear to everyone that the Grimes themselves were the problem. Seeing Americans living there, at the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains, the bandits assumed the community was rich. The Grimes recognised that it would be best for everyone if they left.
So ended a productive decade for the couple. As young newlyweds in 1952, they had gone to live among the Huichol in the Mexican state of Nayarit, far from shops, roads, electricity and comforts of modern civilisation. Joseph had produced a dictionary of the Huichol language and started work on a translation of the New Testament, and Barbara had brought three children into the world.
But the Grimes soon found a new outlet for their energy. Back in America, Richard Pittman of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), the Protestant missionary organisation that had sent the couple to Mexico, recruited them to his pet project. The mission of SIL, now SIL International, is to research and document languages in order to translate the Bible into as many of them as possible. In 1951 Pittman had started interviewing missionaries and linguists about the languages that were spoken in the parts of the world where they worked. The result was a language catalogue called Ethnologue, the first mimeographed edition of which ran to ten pages. The Grimes threw themselves into the project, and Ethnologue grew and grew. By the time Barbara took over as editor in 1974, the next step seemed logical, if daunting. “I made the decision to try to include all the countries and languages of the world,” she told me over the phone from Hawaii, where she and Joseph live now that they are retired.
As is often the case, the true value of Pittman’s idea, and Barbara Grimes’s contribution to it, only became clear much later. In 1951 nobody anticipated the death of languages, explains Paul Lewis, Ethnologue’s current editor. Like old sailors, languages were just thought to live on and on. Now we know that’s not true. Optimistic estimates suggest that by 2100 at least half of the roughly 6,000 extant languages will be either dead or moribund, meaning that children will not be speaking them. Approximately two-thirds of those 6,000 languages have never been written down.
These days a global army of linguists (some missionaries, some not) feed Ethnologue and keep it up-to-date. Lewis coordinates their efforts with the help of a small editorial team based at SIL’s headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Academic linguists who contribute to the database aren’t paid for their efforts, though an Ethnologue citation embellishes their publication record. The catalogue includes roughly 7,000 languages and is updated roughly every five years, both in print and online; the latter version is freely accessible to anyone.
Many linguists are uncomfortable with Ethnologue’s missionary roots. Indeed, missionaries have long been blamed for linguicide for the way they impose “killer” languages such as English and Spanish on speakers of minority languages, says Tove Skutnabb-Kangas, a linguist who is now retired from the University of Roskilde in Denmark. In his 2009 book, "Dying Words", Nicholas Evans, an Australian linguist, tells the tale of the Aboriginal language Kayardild, once spoken by inhabitants of Bentinck Island, Queensland. In the 1940s, missionaries evacuated Bentinck Islanders to the mission on Mornington Island, about 50 kilometres to the north-west, where children were not taught Kayardild. Today the language, which Ethnologue classifies as “nearly extinct”, has only six speakers left.
Yet Evans says there are also plenty of examples of missionaries helping to preserve minority languages. For example, the Spanish priests who followed the conquistadors into South America documented indigenous languages as they went. Evans describes his attitude to Ethnologue as pragmatic. “It is clearly biased by its missionary agenda,” he says, citing its information about Bible translations as an example. “On the other hand, they are the only people who have put the resources into assembling a worldwide database, and that counts for a lot in my eyes.”
Though academic linguists are suspicious of SIL's religious goals, many concede that the Ethnologue is the best tool of its kind. This despite the fact that much of the information is dated, meaning that some languages classified as spoken are actually extinct, according to Lyle Campbell, a linguist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Atsugewi, Clallam and Coos are just three of many examples of extinct languages he cites. A more serious problem, Campbell says, is how Ethnologue defines a language. “In most parts of the world, Ethnologue has a much higher number of languages than most linguists working there would recognise,” he says. This has led some to suspect that SIL International is attempting to justify having more missionaries in the field than the language work strictly warrants.
Lewis, the editor of Ethnologue, acknowledges these complaints. “People write to us saying, you say there are two varieties of our language, well we’re all one people,” he says. However, the criteria his team uses are the ones that Barbara and Joseph Grimes painstakingly developed half a century ago, which boil down to whether two speakers can understand each other or not. Defining a language is notoriously difficult. At which point in the divergence of two dialects does one decide that they have become different languages? The Ethnologue definition isn’t perfect, says Lewis, but it’s one of the embarrassments of linguistics that the entire field of study hasn’t come up with a better one.
But if Ethnologue’s working method hasn’t changed in the last half-century, the image it projects to the outside world has. The Grimes had no objection to calling themselves missionaries, but Lewis’s generation is squeamish about the label. “The stereotype is not one we want to own,” he says. “We describe ourselves as linguists, translators, development workers, and we do it as a faith-based organisation and out of a Christian motivation.”
Modern missionaries are anthropologically aware, he says. They understand the importance of minority languages, not just for communication but also for a people’s identity, and they are ge
nerally more deferential than missionaries in centuries past. Moreover, in declaring their ideology at the outset, he believes that SIL International linguists are more intellectually honest than academic linguists who claim to have no ideological bias at all.
Would SIL International ever consider ceding Ethnologue, so that it could become a linguistic enterprise without a religious agenda? This has been discussed, says Lewis, but mostly outside the organisation. The problem is, Ethnologue was built and is maintained with the help of a large number of volunteers and with money provided by Christian organisations. “As I look at the academic world, I don’t see any other institution that could support something of this magnitude over this period of time,” he says. Languages evolve and die, but over long stretches of time, making the monitoring process a protracted one. Ethnologue is valuable because it has created a sort of surveillance network for languages that ensures continuity.
Since 1986 the Grimes have lived and worked in Hawaii. In 2000, aged 71, Joseph Grimes published a translation of the New Testament in Hawaii Creole English, called "Da Jesus Book". The following is an extract: “God wen get so plenny love an aloha fo da peopo inside da world, dat he wen send me, his one an ony Boy, so dat everybody dat trus me no get cut off from God, but get da real kine life dat stay to da max foeva.” (John 3:16) The work of 12 years with the help of 26 indigenous speakers, it resulted in a grammar book and a dictionary as well.SIL International missionaries continue to travel to far-flung parts of the world to document languages, much like academic linguists, but with the security of faith rather than of tenure, and with no official retirement age. With thousands of languages still undocumented, many of which are in danger of dying before they are written down, it looks as though these emissaries of faith will continue to find plenty of work to keep them busy.Copyright 2010 More Intelligent Life (www.moreintelligentlife.com). Greetings in the name of Triune God Yahweh, the only true God up on whom all the true prophets have called, who in incarnation was known by the name Lord Jesus Christ.
I give all the glory and honor to our Lord Jesus Christ, and express my thanks to all our brothers who have worked tirelessly to arrange this rebuttal program.
At the outset I must make it very clear why we are conducting this program.
I am assuming most of you have heard the name Janab Dr. Zakir Naik. He regularly conducts programs questioning doctrines of Christianity and telecasts them through his channel PeaceTV as though there is no one to answer him.
He had one or two debates with Christians, who are very good authors or preachers but not debaters.
In fact, when Christian debaters such as Bro. James White, Bro. Sam Shamoun, and Bro. David Wood had invited him debates, he refused to accept their invitations.
We at Sakshi Apologetics Network also approached him with a debate invitation and suggested a few topics. His organization cited lame excuses and tactically evaded the debate invitation.
Debating authors and preachers and not taking up invitations with debaters is like playing an effective chess match with Sachin Tendulakar, and then evading an invitation from Vishwanath Anand saying that he does not have the fan following of Sachin Tendulkar.
We are now left with no option except to obey the Holy Bible.
1 Peter 3:14-15 commands us not fear their threat or terror but answer those who question our faith.
Apostles did that.
In Acts 9:22 – Apostle Paul confounded Jews.
In Acts 9:29 – Apostle Paul disputed against Hellenists.
Acts 18:28 – Apollos vigorously refuted Jews publicly.
Obeying the commandment of the Holy Bible, we will be doing exactly the same today.
We will be displaying one of the debates he had with an eminent author. As you would watch, you will notice that there is hardly any science but it is more of misquoting and misrepresenting the Holy Bible.
We have divided his talk into four parts. We will be displaying those parts separately and refuting those one by one:
Part 1: Astronomy and the Holy Bible
Part 2: Diet and Nutrition and Test of Believers in the Holy Bible
Part 3: Hydrology and Medicine and the Holy Bible
Part 4: Mathematics and the Holy Bible
Again, I must caution that there is hardly any rocket science in any of these parts. I would be basically exposing Janab Dr. Zakir Naik’s double standards for Quran and the Holy Bible, his out of context quotations and misrepresentations from the Holy Bible and at times, total misquotations from the Holy Bible.
If you have come today to listen on the Holy Bible and Science, I would recommend you to wait for another one and a half hour till Pastor Sudhkar Mondithoka, who was previously a faculty in science, speaks. His talk, which will be in Telugu, would address the topic on the Holy Bible and Science.
Part 1: Astronomy (Dr. Zakir Naik)
1:48:00-
First we deal with Astronomy. The Bible speaks about the creation of the universe. In the beginning, 1st Book, Book of Genesis, 1st Ch. , it is mentioned – It says… ‘Almighty God created the Heavens and the Earth, in six days and talks about a evening and a morning, referring to a 24 – hour day. Today scientists tell us, that the universe cannot be created in a 24 hour period of six days. Qur’an too speaks about six ‘ayyams’. The Arabic word singular is ‘yaum’ plural is ‘ayyam’. It can either mean a day of 24 hours, or it is a very long period, a ‘yaum’, an epoch. Scientists say we have no objection in agreeing that the universe – it could have been created in 6 very long periods.
1:49:03
Point No.2 – Bible says in Genesis Ch. No. 1 Verses No. 3 and 5,…‘Light was created on the first day.’ Genesis , Ch. , 1 Verses, 14 to 19… ‘The cause of light – stars and the sun, etc. was created on the fourth day’. How can the cause of light be created on the 4th day – later than the light which came into existence on the first day? – It is unscientific.
1:49:30
Further, the, Bible says Genesis, Ch. 1, Verses 9 to 13… ‘Earth was created on the 3rd day. How can you have a night and day without the earth? The day depends upon the rotation of the Earth Without the earth created, how can you have a night and day?
Point No..4, Genesis , Ch. No. 1 Verses 9 to 13 says… ‘Earth was created on the third day.’ Genesis Ch. No. 1 Verses 14 to 19 says…‘The Sun and the Moon were created on the fourth day.’ Today science tells us… ‘Earth is part of the parent body… the sun.’ It cannot come into existence before the sun – It is unscientific.
Point No. 5, the Bible says in Genesis, Ch. No.1, Verse No. 11 to 13…‘The vegetation, the herbs the shrubs, the trees – they were created on the 3rd day And the Sun, Genesis, Ch. No. 1, Verses. 14 to 19, was created on the 4th day. How can the vegetation come into existence without sunlight, and how can they survive without sunlight?
Point No.6, that the Bible says in Genesis, Ch. 1, Verses No.16, that…‘God created two lights the greater light, the Sun to rule the day, and the lesser light the Moon, to rule the night. The actual translation, if you go to the Hebrew text, it is ‘lamps’…‘Lamps having lights of its own.’ And that you will come to know better, if you read both the Verses – Genesis , Ch. No.1, Verse. 16, as well as 17. Verse No.17 says…‘And Almighty God placed them in the firmament, to give light to the earth… To give light to the earth.’ Indicating, that Sun and the Moon has its own light – which is in contradiction with established scientific knowledge that we have.
(Dr. Naik) There are certain people who try and reconciliate, and say that the six days mentioned in the Bible, it actually refers to epocs – like the Qur’an long periods – not six, 24 hour day. It is illogical – you read in the Bible, evening, morning – It clearly states 24 hours, it indicates. But even if I use the concordance approach – no problem. I agree with your illogical argument – Yet they will only be able to solve the 1st scientific error of 6 days creation, and second, of first day ‘light’ and 3rd day ‘earth.’ The remaining four, yet they cannot solve. Some further say that… ‘If it is a 24-hour period, why cannot the vegetables survive for one 24 hour day without sunlight?’ I say ‘Fine – If you say that the vegetables were created before the sun, and can survive for one 24-hour day, I have got no objection. But you cannot say the days mentioned are 24 hours as well as epochs – You cannot have the cake and eat it, both. If you say it is long period, you solve Point No.1 and 3, the remaining 4 are yet there. If you say the days are 24 hours day, you solve only Point No.5 – the remaining 5 are yet there – It becomes unscientific. I leave it to Dr. William Campbell, whether he wants to say… ‘It is long period’, and say that there are only 4 scientific errors – or say… ‘It is a 24 hour day’, and say there is only 5 scientific errors in the creation of the universe.
(Dr. Naik) Regarding the concept of Earth, there are various Scientists who have described… ‘How will the world end.’ Hypothesis – Some may be right, some may be wrong. But either the world will perish or the world will live forever. Both cannot take place simultaneously – It is unscientific. But this is exactly what the Bible says. It is mentioned in the Bible, in the book of Hebrews, Ch. No.1 Verses No.10 and 11, and the book of Psalms, Ch. No.102, Verse No.25 and 26, that…‘Almighty God created the Heavens and the Earth, and they will perish.’ Exactly opposite is mentioned in the book of Ecclesiastics, Ch. No.1, Verse No.4, and the book of Psalms, Ch. No.78, Verse No.69, that… ‘The earth will abide forever.’ I leave it to Dr. William Campbell to choose which of the two Verses are unscientific – the first pair or the second pair. One has to be unscientific – Both cannot take place. The world cannot abide forever as well as perish – It is unscientific.
(Dr. Naik) Regarding ‘the Heavens’, the Bible says in Job, Ch. 26, Verse 11, that…‘The pillars of the Heaven will tremble.’ Qur’an says in Surah Luqman, Ch. 31, Verse No.10, that…‘The Heavens are without any pillars – Don`t you see? Don’t you see the Heavens are without any pillars? – Bible says heaven have got pillars. Not only do the Heavens have got pillars – Bible says in the first book of Samuel, Ch. No.2 Verses No.8, as well as the book of Job Ch. No.9, Verse No.6, and the book of Psalms Ch. No.75, Verse No.3, that… ‘Even the earth have got pillars.’
Astronomy Answers
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik has raised eight questions in the first clip that we saw.
First six questions are related to creation account and the next two questions are related to earth and heavens.
According to Janab Dr. Zakir Naik, there are six or at least five scientific errors in the Holy Bible.
Six questions regarding creation:
Let me summarize the first six questions:
(1) The length of the days, whether it is a 24 hour literal days or long periods. According to Janab Dr. Zakir Naik since the Holy Bible uses the phrase evening and morning, it should be only 24 hour day and not long periods, whereas Quran uses the word to mean long periods.
(2) Was light created before the Sun?
(3) Earth was created on the third day. How can you have day and night without earth?
(4) Sun and the moon were created on fourth day. How can it be since earth is a part of sun and moon?
(5) Trees and herbs were created before the sun and moon. How can it be so because trees and herbs require sun light?
(6) Sun and moon are called lights. How can moon be called a light since it does not its own light and the Hebrew translation would mean lamp having its own light.
There is a claim that Quran does not teach six literal days. There is a charge that the Holy Bible teaches unscientific things.
First, let me expose the double standards of Janab Dr. Zakir Naik in raising these questions.
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik said Quran teaches very long periods and not six literal days. That is Janab Dr. Zakir Naik’s opinion. It is not what Hadiths teach.
A Muslim must interpret Quran by Sunnah, traditions of Muhammad.
Christians, please take a note of this. Quran is NOT a book like the Holy Bible. Quran cannot and should not be interpreted by Quran alone.
Let me give you a few reasons why Quran cannot and should not be interpreted by Quran alone.
Surah 16:44 “We have sent down unto you the Message; that you (Muhammad) may explain clearly to men what is sent for them, and that they may give thought.”
It is Muhammad who has to explain the Quran. We do not have any details of Muhammad in the Quran. We have his details in Siras and Hadiths. Quran has to be interpreted by Sunnah.
Further,
Surah 3: 32 Say: “Obey Allah and His Messenger”.
It is not enough to obey Allah but also Muhammad.
Surah 33: 21 “Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct).”
Muslims are supposed to follow the pattern of Muhammad. But by name Muhammad is mentioned only four times in the Quran.
Surah 3:144
Surah 33:40
Surah 47:2
Surah 48:29
If you include the name Ahmad, then five: Surah 61:6.
In other words, if you need to know the pattern of Muhammad, you need the Sunnah.
Further, if a Muslim takes a Quran alone position, then five pillars of Islam would change. Shaddah itself would change.
In fact, ‘a Quran alone Islam’ is an Islam without Muhammad. We know that it is wrong as per Quran itself.
Ibn Kathir in his introduction to Tafsir, Volume 1, Page 29 cites Hadiths and says:
“This is why the Messenger of Allah said ‘I was given the Quran and its equal with it, in reference to the Sunnah. The Sunnah was a revelation from Allah just as the Quran, although it is not recited as the Quran is recited.”
Ibn Kathir Volume 1, Page 33, cites a Hasan Hadiths, recorded by Sunan Abu Dawud, and Al Tirmidhi:
“Whoever explains the Quran with his opinion, or with what he has no knowledge of, then let him assume his seat in the Fire.”
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik cannot interpret Quran by his opinion. He should interpret it by Sunnah.
So, let us check what Sunnah has to say on this.
Sahih Muslim Hadith number 6707:
Reported by Abu Huraira, one of the most authentic narrators as per Sunni Muslims.
“Abu Huraira reported that Allah’s Messenger (mpbuh) took hold of my hands and said: Allah the Exalted and Glorious,
Saturday- He created clay
Sunday- He created the mountains
Monday- He created the trees
Tuesday- He created the things entailing labour
Wednesday – created light
Thursday – He caused animals to spread on Thursday
Friday – He created Adam (pbuh) after ‘Asr on Friday; the last creation at the last hour of the hours of Friday, i.e. Between afternoon and night.”
Allah created trees on Monday and light on Wednesday.
That is why one of the greatest commentators of Quran, Al-Jalayalan said:
Tafsir Al-Jalayalan for Surah 10: 3 “Truly your Lord is God Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, of the days of this world, that is, in the same measure [of time], since there was no sun or moon then.
Al-Jalayalan accepts that six days are day of this world and sun and moon were not created initially.
If one interprets the Quran by following the correct methodology, he has to agree that the Quran also teaches literal days and not long periods.
So, had Janab Dr. Zakir Naik interpreted Quran with Sunnah, he should have never ever raised these six questions.
Further, not only as a Muslim, but Janab Dr. Zakir Naik should not have raised these questions by his own standards.
Why do I say this?
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik, in Q& A of his lecture ‘Quran and Modern Science – Conflict or Conciliation?, when a sister asked about evolution, “it is just a theory, therefore I do not want to talk about it.” and he concluded it by saying Quran does not contradict any established fact.
So, unless it is an established fact, Janab Dr. Zakir Naik does not want to quote it.
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik sahib, the calculation of the age of universe, and the origin of universe are also based on theories. Big Bang might be the most accepted theory among astronomers. But it is still a theory.
In fact, I read the question and answer session of the same lecture Quran and Modern Science – Conflict or Conciliation?, a brother asked about the origin of universe, and Janab Dr. Zakir Naik himself said ‘big bang theory.’
The age of the universe is calculated based on the in-built assumptions of big bang theory. If assumptions change, then the age also would change.
In other words, Janab Dr. Zakir Naik should not have raised these questions by his own standard.
Now, if Christians believe that the world was created in six literal days, it does not contradict any established scientific fact.
Assuming it to be six literal days, let me answer Janab Dr. Zakir Naik’s questions.
(1) The length of the days, whether it is a 24 hour literal days or long periods. According to Janab Dr. Zakir Naik since the Holy Bible uses the phrase evening and morning, it should be only 24 hour day and not long periods, whereas Quran uses the word to mean long periods.
Answer: I am assuming it to be six literal days. I will come back to the question again at end.
And I have shown that if you interpret Quran by Sunnah, Quran also teaches six literal days.
(2) Was light created before the Sun?
Answer: Sun is not the only source of light. However, it could be also that on the fourth day, sun and the moon appeared in the fourth day.
According to Strong’s strong, the Hebrew word for “made” which is asah, 2,600 times in the Old Testament of which only 60 times it is used as creation.
Otherwise it has a wide variety of meanings, some of which include: did, made, show, appear, made to appear, etc.
Genesis 41:25 – Patriarch Joseph says to Pharaoh- The dream of Pharaoh is one. God showed Pharaoh what He is about to do.
Exodus 14: 13- Be still and see the salvation of LORD which He will show to you today.
Exodus 18: 20 – You shall teach them ordinances and laws and show them the way wherein they must walk.
Exodus 25: 9- According to all that I show you.
(3) Earth was created on the third day. How can you have day and night without earth?
(4) Sun and the moon were created on fourth day. How can it be since earth is a part of sun and moon?
Answer: Janab Dr. Zakir Naik is misquoting the Holy Bible here.
The Holy Bible did not say that the planet earth was created on the third day.
Genesis 1:9-10 By the word of God, waters were gathered at one place and the dry land appeared. God called the dry land earth.
When was earth created?
Genesis 1:1-2 “In the beginning God created heavens and the earth and the earth was without form.”
Once Janab Dr. Zakir Naik pays a little more attention to the text of the Holy Bible rather than merely mugging up things, his questions would also come down.
(5) Trees and herbs were created before the sun and moon. How can it be so because trees and herbs require sun light?
Answer: If it is six literal days, then this question is irrelevant. Also, remember that Islam also teaches that trees and herbs were created before the sun and moon.
Even if it was six long periods, it would not have been a contradiction.
Dr. Robert C. Newman has pointed out that “vegetation was the immediate cause of both the oxygenation of the atmosphere and the removal of its heavy cloud cover!”
In other words, the Hebrew word ‘asah’ which can also means show would make sense if oxygenation produced by the vegetation removed the otherwise heavy cloud.
(6) Sun and moon are called lights. How can moon be called a light since it does not its own light and the Hebrew translation would mean lamp having its own light.
Answer: According to Dr. Zakir Naik, the actual translation is lamps. Lamps having lights of its own.
The Hebrew word that is used is ma’owr.
There is nothing which suggests that this should be translated as lamps and more specially lamps having its own lights.
Proverbs 15:30- when it says ‘light of the eyes” the same word ma’owr is used.
No one would say that it should be translated as lamp having its own light.
Further, the Holy Bible also points out that the sun is the cause of moon’s light.
Ezekiel 32: 7-8 “I will cover the sun with a cloud and the moon will not give its light.”
Matthew 24:29 – ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light”
When the sun is covered, the moon will not give its light. When the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light.
As I said that, I had assumed six days to be six literal days.
Six Long Periods:
Now, I do not want to say six literal days is the only way of interpreting Genesis.
St. Augustine, who lived before Muhammad, said that days of Genesis are God divided days and not sun divided days.
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik would say ‘no the Holy Bible uses evening and morning, therefore it has to be only six literal days.
We often use morning and evening as a figurative speech to mean beginning and end of a period.
For example, we say dawn of history or at the sunset of one’s life.
Now, I want to point out that there are a few Islamic scholars who thought that Sunday, Monday, Tuesday etc are long periods and not literal days.
For Surah 10:3, in Tafsir attributed to Ibn Abbas, it says Sunday, Friday etc are not literal days but long periods.
Assuming the author to be Ibn Abbas, note what Ibn Abbas says. Ibn Abbas did not deny that Quranic six days are days such as Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Ibn Abbas did not deny it, because Hazarat Muhammad very clearly taught that these six days are Saturday, Sunday, Monday etc.
Ibn Abbas only tried to say that Sunday, Monday, Tuesday etc are long periods.
Sir, if Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday etc can be long periods, why cannot morning and evening be long periods.
Morning and evening can at least be figurative speeches, I do not know how Sunday, Monday, Tuesday can be figurative speeches.
Earth and the Heavens
Now, the next three questions:
(7) According to Hebrews 1:10-11 and Psalms 102:25-26, earth will perish. However, according Ecclesiastics 1:4 and Psalms 78: 69‘The earth will abide forever.’
Answer:
In Psalms 102:25-26, the word perish (avad) can mean ruined.
Exodus 10: 7 “Do you not yet know that Egypt is destroyed?”(avad)
Numbers 21:29-30 “Heshbon is perished” or ruined. Avad.
When Psalms 102, uses the word avad, does it mean cease to exist or ruined?
Psalms 102 itself explains the meaning.
Psalms 102: 26 – They will perish, but You will endure; Yes, they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will change them, And they will be changed.
In other words, Psalmist is saying that the present world would ruin and it would be changed.
2 Peter 3:10-13- the present earth will be burned up and then we look forward the new earth.
Or, this earth as we know would be changed.
Psalm 104:30 “When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.”
Romans 8:18-25- the creation itself WILL BE LIBERATED FROM ITS BONDAGE TO DECAY AND BROUGHT INTO THE GLORIOUS FREEDOM OF THE CHILDREN OF GOD.
Will the earth abide forever? Yes, in existence, now they would abide forever.
Will it be ruined and renewed? Yes, it will be so.
Revelation 21: 1 “we will see a new heaven and new earth”
Now, if Janab Dr. Zakir Naik wants everything to be taken very literally without even looking at the context, let him explain these two verses from Quran.
Surah 28:88 “All things perish, except His Face.”
Surah 55:26-27 “All that dwells upon the earth is perishing, yet still abides the Face of thy Lord, majestic, splendid.”
Not only that everything, including human beings would perish, even Allah’s body would perish. Remember there are many Muslims who believe that Allah has a body.
Question 8: The Bible says in Job 26:11 that pillars of heaven will tremble.
Question 9: Earth as got pillars. The Bible says in 1 Samuel 2:8, Job 9:6 and Psalms 75: 3 that earth has got pillars. Whereas Quran in Surah 31: 10 says that ‘The Heavens are without any pillars – Don`t you see? Don’t you see the Heavens are without any pillars? –
Heaven has pillars.
Job 26: 11 “The pillars of heaven will tremble.”
The pillar here could be a figurative way for saying the strength. Like how we say “he/she is the pillar of our Church”.
Let us read the CONTEXT. Four verses above Job 26:11
Job 26: 7 “He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; He suspends the earth over nothing.”
He spreads out the northern skies over empty space.
Job 26: 8 “He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under its weight.”
Here Job describes the strength of the clouds.
Job 26: 9 “He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds over it.”
Here Job describes about the vastness of the clouds.
Job 26: 11 “The pillars of the heavens quake; aghast at his rebuke.”
In other words, Job is saying ‘the LORD has spread out skies over empty space, He gave vastness and strength to it, but their strength is gone at His rebuke.”
In fact, this portion is a remarkably scientific as well as beautifully poetical.
A TEXT without a CONTEXT is a PRETEXT.
Question 9: Earth has got pillars:
1 Samuel 2: 8- “He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from the ash heap, To set them among princes And make them inherit the throne of glory. “For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, And He has set the world upon them. He will guard the feet of His saints, But the wicked shall be silent in darkness. “For by strength no man shall prevail.”
Pillar here would mean strength.
In fact, the author himself says ‘pillars of the earth are the LORD’s.”
Later he says “For by strength no man shall prevail”
That sort of parallelism itself would clarify the meaning.
Adding to this, the Hebrew word for earth used in 1 Samuel 2:8 can mean people in general.
Psalms 96:13 “For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth.
Isaiah 45: 22 “ Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth”
Now coming to the next verse:
Job 9: 6 – He shakes the earth out of its place, and its pillars tremble.
Here also pillar would mean strength.
Remember the same author said:
Job 26: 7 “He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; He suspends the earth over nothing.”
When the same author had clarified that God suspends the earth over nothing, we have no right to misrepresent his poetical language.
Now coming to the third verse:
Psalms 75: 3- The earth and all its inhabitants are dissolved; I set up its pillars firmly. “I said to the boastful, ‘Do not deal boastfully,’ And to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up the horn.”
Again, anyone who reads carefully this passage once would agree that the pillar here also refers to strength.
Read it:
It says to the wicked “Do not lift up the horn.” And the reason is LORD has set up pillars firmly.
Of course, no one with right mind would say that Psalmists is saying wicked not to lift up the horn. It is a figurative way of saying ‘do not show your power.’
Because as the Psalmist says “the strength, the pillar is from LORD.”
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik said that Quran in Surah 31:10 says “The Heavens are without any pillars – Don`t you see? Don’t you see the Heavens are without any pillars?”
I do not know which translation Janab Dr. Zakir Naik is using. But the translations that I know of Quran does not translate the verse as “Don’t you see the Heavens are without pillars.”
For example:
Abduallah Yusuf Ali:
Surah 31: 10 “He created the heavens without any pillars THAT YE CAN SEE;
N.J. Dawood: “He raised the heavens WITHOUT VISIBLE PILLARS,
Shakir: “He created the heavens without pillars AS YOU SEE THEM,
Tafsir attributed to Ibn Abbas says this: it is also said that this means: He created the heavens with supports that you cannot see,
Further, Quran also teaches that earth is flat. I will not merely quote Quran, I will give you one of the best Quranic commentaries to prove my point.
Surah. 88:20- Earth is flat. (Tafsir of Ibn Kathir, Vol 10, Page 462).
Surah 43: 10 Earth is spread out like a carpet –(Tafsir of Ibn Kathir, Vol 8, page 620).
Remember, Janab. Dr. Zakir Naik has to refute Ibn Kathir not us.
Part 2: Diet and Nutrition and Test for Believers
(Dr. Naik) In the field of ‘Diet and Nutrition’ let’s analyze, what does the Bible say. The Bible says in the book of Genesis, Ch. No.1, Verse No.29, that… ‘God has given you all the herbs bearing seeds, the trees bearing fruits – those that bear seed, as meat for you.’ New International Version says… ‘The seed bearing plants and the trees bearing fruits bearing seeds are food for you, all of them.’ Today, even a layman knows that there are several poisonous plants like wild berries, stritchi, datura, plants containing alkaloid, polyander, bacaipoid – that which if you ingest, if you eat there are high possibilities you may die. How come the Creator of the universe and the human beings, does not know, that if you have these plants, you will die. I hope Dr. William Campbell does not give these vegetarian diet to his patients.
(Dr. Naik) The Bible has a scientific test how to identify a true believer. It is mentioned in the Gospel of Mark, Ch. No.16, Verse No.17 and 18 – It says that… ‘There will be signs for true believers and among the signs – In my name they shall cast out devils, they shall speak foreign tongues, new tongues, they shall take up serpents – And if they drink deadly poison, they shall not be harmed – And when they place their hand over the sick, they shall be cured.’ This is a scientific test – In scientific terminology, it is known as the ‘confirmatory test’ for a true Christian believer.
In the past 10 years of my life, I have personally interacted with thousands of Christians, including missionaries – I have not come across a single Christian, who has passed this confirmatory test of the Bible. I have not come across a single Christian who took poison – I have not come across any who took poison, and who has not died. And in scientific terminology, this is also called as the ‘falsification test’ That means if a false person tries and does this test… takes poison, he will die. And a false person will not dare attempt this test – If you are not a true Christian believer, you will not dare attempt this test. Because you try and attempt the falsification test, you will fail. So a person who is not a true Christian believer, will never attempt this test. I have read the book ‘The Qur’an and the Bible in the light of history and science’ written by Dr. William Campbell. And I assume – that he is a true Christian believer, and at least I would like him to confirm to me about the falsification test. Please be rest assured… Please be rest assured, I will not ask Dr. William Campbell to have deadly poison – Because I don’t want to jeopardize the debate. What I’ll do – I will only ask him to speak in foreign tongues… In new languages. And as many of you may be aware that India is a land, which has more than 1000 languages and dialects. Only thing I request him is, to say these 3 words… ‘One hundred rupees’, in the 17 official languages. There are only 17 official languages in India and to make it easier for Dr. William Campbell, I have got a ‘One hundred-rupee note.’ And this has all the 17 languages mentioned here. Besides English and Hindi, I will help him. I give him a beginning –‘Ek sav rupaiya, In Hindi. The remaining 15 languages are here – I request him to read. I know the test says… ‘They will speak foreign languages on their own, without the help of reading’ – but I want to make the test easier, I want to see someone passing the test – I’ve not seen any one. So if he cannot say it on his own, or from his memory, at least read it. I don’t mind I’ll accept it. And I would request the chairperson to give it to Dr. William Campbell. He has his rebuttal – 15 languages, ‘Ek sav rupaiya’… 3 words only.
Part 2: Answer for Diet and Nutrition and Test for True Believers
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik raised two sets of questions. One as he said on diet and nutrition. And the other is regarding tests for true believers.
I will first summarize the question on diet and nutrition, answer it and then summarize the question on test for believers and answer it.
Question 10: In Genesis 1: 29, God gave every herb that yields seed for mankind to eat. However, there are a few poisonous plants which if a person eats may surely die.
Answer: This is another case of quoting the Holy Bible out if its context.
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik quoted Genesis 1:29. Had he read the two verses which immediately follow, he would have understood that Genesis 1 speaks about the paradise in earth which is different from the cursed earth mentioned in Genesis 3 onwards.
The context is crystal clear. Had he read at least Genesis 1:30 and Genesis 1:31, he would have understood that it is speaking about paradise on earth.
Genesis 1:30- every beast of the earth, every bird of the sky, and every creeping thing eat only herbs. In other words, it was an earth without death.
Or in other words:
Genesis 1:31 says – it was time when God blessed everything that He had made.
But the things changed after.
Genesis 3, two chapters below Genesis 1, Adam and Eve sinned and death entered into the world.
Romans 5: 12 “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin.”
I said in Genesis 3, the situation had changed.
I hope Janab Dr. Zakir Naik, if he goes to paradise, will not try to set up hospitals there.
Question 11: Janab Dr. Zakir Naik quoted Mark 16: 17-18 and challenged many Christians to speak in tongues and drink poison. He says these are Biblical tests for a believer.
Again, this is misrepresenting Christianity.
The Holy Bible does not teach us that these are test for believers.
1 Corinthians 12: 4-6 says that these are gifts from the Holy Spirit and not tests.
Mark 16: 17-18 also gives us promises just as Old Testament in Psalms 91 gives promises.
Psalms 91: 13- “You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.”
A very similar promise like Mark 16. If the Old Testament prophets were asked as a test to tread upon serpent or cobra, would they have done it?
Or.
Psalms 91: 11-12 “For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.”
In Matthew 4: 6-7 Satan quoted Psalms 91: 11-12 and said to Lord Jesus Christ: “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘in their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'”
Now, when Janab Dr. Zakir Naik quotes Mark 16: 17-18 and says “if you are a true believer, drink this poison and speak in tongues: our answer shall be the same: It is written again, ‘you shall not tempt the LORD your God.”
Further, both in the Old Testament and New Testament, the God who gave us the promise has also fulfilled it.
In Daniel 6: when Daniel was in the lion’s den, Lord protected him.
In Acts 2: 1-12 – Christians spoke in tongues.
In Acts 5;12-16 Apostles healed the sick.
In Acts 19: 11-16- Apostles casted out demons.
In Acts 28: 3-9- a viper fastened on Apostle’s hand, but the poison could not harm him.
Every single promise has been fulfilled.
Further, even in Mark 16 itself, its purpose and fulfilment is written.
Mark 16: 20 “And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.”
When Torah was given to Prophet Moses, it was accompanied by miraculous sign. All the Old Testament books had to agree with the Torah to be a part of the Old Testament.
When the New Testament was given, it was accompanied by miracles.
We want to know what are the miracles that accompanied Quran.
Further, Quran gave a promise.
Surah 16:99 – Satan has no authority over true believers.
However,
Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 53, Number 400
Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 490
Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 660- Muhammad was under the magic spell.
Unlike the Holy Bible, which fulfilled the promises, Quran could not fulfil its promise.
Moreover, Hadiths gave some medicines for poison.
Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 7, 664, 671- Hazart Muhammad said if someone takes seven/odd number of ajwa dates, magic and poison would affect him on that day.
Remember the hadith that Ibn Kathir quoted: Allah gave and Quran and its equal.
So, Janab Dr. Zakir Naik should eat some seven ajwa dates and drink poison and show us that his prophet was a true prophet.
Part 3: Hydrology and Medicine
(Dr. Naik) What does the Bible say regarding ‘Hydrology’? Bible says in Genesis, Ch. No.9, Verse No.13 to 17, that… ‘After God, at the time of Noah submerged the world by flood, and after the flood’ subsided, He said… ‘I put up a rainbow in the sky as a promise to the humankind never to submerge the world again, by water. To the unscientific person it may be quite good… ‘Oh rainbow is a sign of Almighty God, never to submerge the world by flood again.’ But today we know very well, that rainbow is due to the refraction of sunlight, with rain or mist. Surely there must have been thousands of rainbows before the time of Noah, (peace be upon him). To say it was not there before Noah’s time you have to assume that the law of refraction did not exist – which is unscientific.’
(Dr. Naik) In the field of medicine, the Bible says in the book of Leviticus, Ch. No.14, Verse No.49 to 53 – it gives a novel way for disinfecting a house from plague of leprosy… disinfecting a house from plague of leprosy. It says that… ‘Take two birds, kill one bird, take wood, scale it – and the other living bird, dip it in water… and under running water – later on sprinkle the house 7 times with it.
Sprinkle the house with blood to disinfect against plague of leprosy? You know blood is a good media of germs, bacteria, as well as toxin – I hope Dr. William Campbell does not use this method of disinfecting the OT, the operation theatre.
(Dr. Naik) It is mentioned in the book of Leviticus , Ch. No.12, Verse No.1 to 5, and we know medically, that after a mother gives birth to a child, the post-partal period, it is unhygienic. To say it is ‘unclean’, Religiously – I have got no objection. But Leviticus , Ch. No.12 Verse No.1 to 5, says that… ‘After a woman gives birth to a male child, she will be unclean for 7 days, and the period of uncleanliness will continue for 33 days more. It she gives birth to a female child, she will be unclean for two weeks, and the period of uncleanliness will continue for 66 days. In short, if a woman gives birth to a male child… ‘a son’, she is unclean for 40 days. If she gives birth to a female child… ‘a daughter’, she is unclean for 80 days. I would like Dr. William Campbell to explain to me scientifically, how come a woman remains unclean for double the period, if she gives birth to a female child, as compared to a male child.
(Dr. Naik) The Bible also has a very good test for adultery – How to come to know a woman has committed adultery, in the book of Numbers, Ch. no.5 Verse No..11 to 31. I’ll just say in brief. It says that… ‘The priest should take holy water in a vessel, take dust from the floor, and put it into the vessel – And that is the bitter water ‘And after cursing it, give it to the woman And if the woman has committed adultery, after she drinks it, the curse will enter her body, the stomach will swell, the thigh will rot, and she shall be cursed by the people. If the woman has not committed adultery, she will remain clean and she will bear the seed. A novel method of identifying whether a woman has committed adultery or not. You know today in the world, there are thousands of cases pending in different parts of the world, in different courts of law – only on the assumption that someone has alleged that a woman has committed adultery. I had read in the newspapers, and I came to know from the media, that the President of this great country Mr. Bill Clinton, he was involved in a sex scandal about 2 years back. I wonder, that why did not the American court use this ‘bitter water test’ for adultery? He would have gone scot-free immediately. Why did not the Christian missionaries of this great country, specially those who are in the medical field like my respected Dr. William Campbell, use this bitter water test to bail out their President, immediately?
Answer to Part 3: Hydrology and Medicine
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik raised one question regarding ‘hydrology’ and three from the field of medicine.
I will begin with question on rainbow.
Question 12: Janab Dr. Zakir Naik said that today we know that the rainbow is formed as a result of refraction of sunlight with rain or mist but the Holy Bible does teach it as a sign of Almighty God. Then he said that we have to assume that law of refraction did not exist before Noah’s time which is unscientific.
Genesis 9 does not rule out law of refraction. In fact, the Holy Bible clearly teaches the connection between rainbow and refraction of sunlight with rainbow or mist.
In Ezekiel 1: 28 “Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day.”
When Christians or even Muslims say that God created everything and sustains everything, they are not denying scientific laws.
Scientific laws describe how nature works. It is God who set those laws.
Probably realizing that a Muslim cannot speak like this, Janab Dr. Zakir Naik added another angle to it. He said at least we must assume that law of refraction did not exist before Noah.
However, the Hebrew word for set, Nathan, does not necessarily mean create but dedicate or set apart for a purpose.
In Genesis 23: 9 – a cave was given to Abraham to bury is his wife Sarah- cave existed at all times, but now it has been given to Abraham as a funeral cave. Gave
Similarly,
In Genesis 9:13 – God gave rainbow as a sign for the covenant with Noah. Rainbow always exited but now it has been given as a sign for the covenant with Noah.
So, the Holy Bible did not say God created rainbow, but he set it as a sign.
Now, why did Janab Dr. Zakir Naik say it is unscientific? The reason is he assumed the law of uniformity.
Science has many philosophical assumptions and law of uniformity is one among them. Law of uniformity says that the nature follows the same laws yesterday, today and tomorrow.
For example, tomorrow morning you would expect the sun to rise and to rise in the east. How do you know that? Because it had been like that in the past, it was like that today and so we expect it to be like that tomorrow as well.
Because of which Janab Dr. Zakir Naik raised this question.
However, Bertrand Russell, the atheistic philosopher, in his book ‘The Problems of Philosophy’ (Chapter 6) raised an interesting point.
He says, we cannot be certain about the law of uniformity.
He wrote: “The man who has fed the chicken every day throughout its life at last wrings its neck instead, showing that more refined views as to the uniformity of nature would have been useful to the chicken.”
There is a high probability that the sun would rise tomorrow.
As Russell writes “It can never quite reach certainty, because we know that in spite of frequent repetitions there sometimes is a failure at the last, as in the case of the chicken whose neck is wrung. Thus probability is all we ought to seek.”
But as Christians we can be sure that law of uniformity would remain as long as this earth remains.
Because our Master, who feeds not only chicken and chicken-hearted, but everyone promised in the same context which Janab Dr. Zakir Naik quoted:
Genesis 8: 22 “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.”
Look at the irony. Janab Dr. Zakir Naik tries to ask a question based on the law of uniformity from the very same context where we have reconfirmation of law of uniformity.
Now to the field of Medicine:
Question 13: Janab Dr. Zakir Naik quoted Leviticus 14:49-53 and said that the Holy Bible teaches to use blood to disinfect.
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik is blatantly misleading people in this. Why do I say that? Janab Dr. Zakir Naik quoted Leviticus 14:49-53.
But just one verse before that, Leviticus 14: 48, makes it clear it is not for disinfection, but after all infection is gone.
Leviticus 14: 48 “But if the priest comes in and examines it, and indeed the plague has not spread in the house after the house was plastered, then the priest shall pronounce the house clean, because the plague is healed.”
It is not for disinfection, it is only after all infection is healed.
I hope Janab Dr. Zakir Naik does not prescribe medicines after diseases are healed. Anyways, I am glad that he is not practicing these days.
Now, why should the blood be used?
If you read the entire chapter, it repeatedly says it is for atonement.
Leviticus 14:53 “make atonement for the house, and it shall be clean.”
In fact, had Janab Dr. Zakir Naik believed in the books of prophets, he would have understood the importance of blood.
In Exodus 12: Israelites were delivered from the judgement because blood was sprinkled on the doorpost.
In Exodus 24: Torah, the Old Testament was established through the sprinkling of the blood.
In Leviticus 16- every sin is atoned, every person is atoned by blood.
Leviticus 17: 11 God said- “’For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.”
We see the fulfilment of all these in Injil, New Testament.
Romans 5:9 We are justified by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1:7 “we have redemption of through the blood of Jesus Christ.
1 John 1: 7 “the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
In Matthew 26:28, like how Prophet Moses took the blood and established the Old Testament, Lord Jesus Christ said “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
Old Testament and New Testament are from the same God.
When a Christian reads the Old Testament, he would not think that blood is for disinfecting but he knows that it is for atonement. Old Testament gave shadows of the atoning death of our Lord Jesus Christ.
But when Janab Dr. Zakir Naik reads the Holy Bible, he thinks that the blood is for disinfecting though the Holy Bible never said it.
We cannot blame him because the message of the Quran is totally different from the message revealed in Torah and Injil. Torah and Injil are from the same God. Quran is from a different source.
Question 14: Leviticus 12- number of unclean days for the mother of a male child and female child are different. Janab Dr. Zakir Naik wants us to give a scientific reason for that.
There is nothing unscientific in having different number of religiously unclean days for a male and female child.
However, science need not be the reason for the difference in days. It could be moral, social or cultural reasons.
Let us look at Leviticus 12 to see if there are any reasons for differences.
Now, let us look at Leviticus 12.
Leviticus 12 speaks about three things related to child birth.
– It speaks about number of unclean days for both male and female child.
– It speaks about sacrifices which were to be offered for both male and female child.
– It also speaks about the male circumcision which was to be done on the eighth day.
The sacrifices which were to be offered were same for the male and female child.
In other words, the value of a male and female child was considered equal.
Therefore, one can say that female child religiously or socially was considered as equal.
However, we must note that it was only the male child who was circumcised and never ever the female child.
Male child has to be circumcised on the eighth day by the Abrahamic covenant which was given before the Mosaic law.
Now, every mother should be and want to be with the child, when he is circumcised. One week for the male child and two weeks for the female child seems to be justified then.
And many scholars say, since circumcision itself is a blood ritual, male child through his circumcision was considered as bearing half of the blood purification. Therefore, mother’s purification days were reduced to half.
This is only the religious reason.
Let us now look at the cultural reasons.
In ancient Egypt or even in many countries now female circumcision is practiced but never in the Holy Bible.
For example, let us take the case of Islam since we are dealing with Islam.
The Quran never commands either male or female circumcision. However, Ahadiths speaks about both male and female circumcision.
Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 59, Number 399
Sahih Muslim, Book 003, Number 0684
Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 41, Number 5251
Imam Malik’s Muwatta: Book 20, Number 20.46.161
Imam Malik’s Muwatta Book 2, Number 2.19.73; see also No. 74, 75, 77)
The Holy Bible through its rituals discourages deplorable practices and encourages healthy and moral practices. By changing the number of days of uncleanness for a male and female child, the Holy Bible reinforces that a female child should never be circumcised.
Because according to the Abrahamic covenant, a child has to be circumcised on the eighth day. If eighth day is still a day of uncleanness, it is not possible for a female child to be circumcised. Days after the eighth day also reinforces that a female child is not circumcised.
Now, let us look at it socially.
Practically ceremonial uncleanness is nothing but abstaining from religious, social and family activities. In other words, it is a kind of rest.
If it is a male child, the mother gets 40 days off. If it is a female child, mother gets 80 days off. This is known as preferential treatment for women. In fact, this preferential treatment of women goes along with rest of the Holy Bible as I will explain in the next question shortly.
Question 15: According to Numbers 5: 11 -31, a woman suspected of adultery should be brought before the priest. He performs certain religious rituals and gives her bitter water to drink. Janab Dr. Zakir Naik wants to know why this test is still not carried out in courts.
Answer: First and foremost, this is a supernatural judgement under the Old Testament. Anyone who reads the passage properly would understand that this is in fact a supernatural judgement.
The Holy Bible clearly presents it as a supernatural judgement under the Old Testament. Let us read the same chapter.
Numbers 5: 18 “’Then the priest shall stand the woman before the LORD”
Numbers 5: 21 “the LORD make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh rot and your belly swell.”
The accused women shall stand before Yahweh, if she has sinned, Yahweh makes her thigh rot and belly swell. Very clearly this is a supernatural punishment.
When you compare this with rituals of other religions around the time, you would see that the Holy Bible again gives preferential treatment for women.
In Babylon, there was a custom to throw women suspected of infidelity to river Euphrates. If she does not get drowned, she was considered as innocent.
In some other cultures, women suspected of infidelity were asked to go through fire, if they survive, they were innocent. If not, they were guilty.
Naturally speaking, all these were against the women but the Holy Bible gives a preferential treatment for women. I do not blame Janab Dr. Zakir Naik for not understanding the preferential treatment given to woman.
But I cannot understand why he cannot understand supernatural judgements.
For example, during the time of Hazart Muhammad, in the 10th after Hijara, when a Christian delegation visited Hazarat Muhammad to debate on certain theological issues, Hazarat Muhammad asked them to come for a curse prayer.
Surah 3:61 “If anyone argues with you, despite the knowledge you have received, then say, “Let us summon our children and your children, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us invoke GOD’s curse upon the liars.”
Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in his voluminous Fath ul-Bari fi Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari writes: “Some of the benefits of this hadith is that one can do Mubahala with an opponent if he insists after losing the argument…. What is known by experience is that one who takes part in Mubahala to support falsehood will not survive its first anniversary.”
If you have any dispute about theological subjects, invoke curse on each other. And within one year, the one who support the falsehood would die.
What an easy way to resolve disputes. When Hazarat Muhammad invited Christians for curse prayers, they did not accept it as that is not what Christians were taught.
But Muslims, Shias- seveners, twelvers, Ismali Muslims, or Sunni’s, Deboandi’s, Salafis, Quran only Muslims, Ahmedians etc, let them all come together and curse each other. Within one year all false Muslims would die- only the true Muslims would live.
With this method, we could have avoided, the long wars between Shias and Sunnis. Within one year, all the problems within Islamic community could have been solved.
It is interesting to note that within one after Hazarat Muhammad invited Christians for a curse, Hazarat Muhammad died. Not only Hazarat Muhammad, even Fatima, whom Hazart Muhammad identified as his family member died within one year.
And others, whom Hazarat Muhammad identified as his family,- Ali, Hasan, and Hussien- none of them had a natural death- all of them were brutally murdered by other Muslims.
Now, Janab Dr. Zakir Naik can ask why are not the Christians doing this test?
The answer is very simple- we are no longer under the Old Testament covenant, we are in the New Testament covenant.
Part 4: Mathematics and Conclusion
(Dr. Naik) ‘Mathematics’ is a branch, which is closely associated with science, with which you can solve problems, etc. There are thousands of contradictions in the Bible – hundreds deal with mathematics, and I’ll first touch on few of them. It is mentioned in Ezra, Ch. No.2, Verse No.1, and Nehemiah, Ch. No.7, Verse No.6, the context that… ‘When the people returned from exile, from Babylon , when king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, when he released the men from Israel , they came back from captivity’ – and the list of the people are given. The list is given in Ezra, Ch. No.2, Verse No.2 to 63, and Nehemiah Ch. No.7, Verse No.7 up to 65; the list is given with the names as well as number of people released. In these 60 Verses there are no less than 18 times – the name is exactly the same but the number is different. There are no less than 18 contradictions in less than 60 Verses, of these two Chapters. This is the list – I don’t have time to run through the list – There are no less than 18 different contradictions in less than 60 Verses. Further it is mentioned in Ezra, Ch. No.2 Verse No.64 that… ‘The total congregation, if you add up… if you add up, it comes to 42,360.’ And if you read in Nehemiah , Ch. No.7, Verse No.66, there also the total is the same 42,360. But if you add up all these verses – which I had to do my homework – this is the list of Ezra… this is the list of Nehemiah. Ezra Ch. No 2, Nehemiah Ch. No 7 – If you add up – I had to do my homework…if you add up, Ezra Ch. No. 2 – It does not come to 42,360 – it comes to 29,818. And if you add up Nehemiah , Ch. No. 7, even then it does not come to 42,360 – It comes to 31,089. The author of the Bible, presumed to be ‘Almighty God’, does not know simple addition. If you give this problem, even to a person who has passed elementary school, he will be able to get the right answer. If you add up all the 60 Verses, it is so easy. Almighty God did not know adding – Nauzubillah… if we presume, that this is the word of God.
Further if we read, in Ezra Ch. No. 2, Verse No. 65, it says…There were 200 singing men and women – Nehemiah Ch. No. 7, Verse No. 67…‘There were 245 singing men and women.’ Were they 200 – or were they 245 singing men and women? Context is the same – A mathematical contradiction.
It is mentioned in the 2nd Kings , Ch. No 24, Verse No 8, that…‘Jehoiachin was 18 years old, when he began to reign Jerusalem , and he reigned for 3 months and 10 days. 2nd Chronicles , Ch. No 36, Verse No 9, says that…‘Jehoiachin was 8 years old when he began to reign and he reigned for 3 months, 10 days. Was Jehoiachin 18 years when he began to reign, or was he 8 years old? Did he reign for 3 months, or did he reign for 3 months 10 days?
Further it is mentioned in the 1st Kings , Ch. No 7, Verse No 26, that…‘In Solomon’s temple, in his molten sea, he had 2000 baths. In 2nd Chronicles , Ch. No 4, Verse No 5, he had 3000 baths. Did he have 2000 baths or did he have 3000 baths? – That, I leave it upon Dr. William Campbell to decide which is correct. There is a clear-cut mathematical contradiction.
Furthermore it is mentioned in the 1st Kings, Ch. No. 15, Verse No. 33, that… ‘Basha, he died in the 26th year of reign of Asa.’ And 2nd Chronicles Ch. No 16, Verse No 1, says that…‘Basha invaded Judah in the 36th years of the reign of Asa.’ How can Basha invade 10 years after his death? – It is unscientific.
(Dr. Naik) To make it easier for Dr. William Campbell, to answer to the points I have raised, I will just mention it in brief -The points that I mentioned.
The first point was that -‘The creation of the Earth and the Heaven – the universe was in six, 24-hour days. Light was then before the source of light –
Point No. 2. Three – Day came into existence before creation of Earth.
Point No. 4 – Earth came into existence before Sun.
Point No. 5 – Vegetation came into existence, before sunlight
Point No. 6 – Light of the Moon is its own light.
Point No. 7 – The earth – Will it perish or will it abide forever?
Point No. 8 – The earth has got pillars.
Point No. 9 – The heavens have got pillars.
Point No. 10 – God said… ‘You can have all plants and all vegetation, including the poisonous plants?’
Point No. 11 – The scientific test the falsification test, of Mark , Ch. No. 16, Verse No. 17 and 18.
Point No. 12 – A woman remains unclean for double the period, if she gives birth to a daughter, as compared to a son.
Point No. 13 – Using blood to disinfect the house, against plague of leprosy.
Point No. 14 – How do you find out the bitter water test for adultery?
Point No. 15 – Eighteen different contradictions in less than 60 Verses of Ezra, Ch. 2, and Nehemiah , Ch. 7. I did not count them as 18 different – I counted them only as one.
Point No. 16 – The total is different is both the chapters.
Point No. 17 – Are there 200 singing men and women, or are there 245 singing men and women?
Point No. 18 – Was Jehoiachin 18 years old, or was he 8 years old when he began to reign?
Point No. 19 – Did he reign for 3 months, or 3 months 10 days.
Point No. 20 – Did Solomon have 3000 baths, or 2000 baths?
Point No. 21 – Is that Basha, how could he invade Judah , 10 years after his death?
Point No. 22 is – Almighty God – He said, I put up a rainbow in the sky, as a promise to the human kind, never to submerge the world again by water.
I have listed only 22, out of the hundreds available unscientific points in the Bible… scientific errors – And I request Dr. William Campbell to answer them. And irrespective whether he uses the ‘concordance approach’ or the ‘conflict approach’… as long as he is logical, he will never be able to prove scientifically, all these 22 aspects I have told him. We agree in Jesus Christ (peace be upon him) – to him was revealed the Injeel. This is not the Injeel – It may contain part of God – But the other unscientific portion is not the word of God.
I would like to end my talk by giving the quotation of the Glorious Qur’an, from Surah Baqarah, Ch. No. 2, Verse 79 …. (Arabic)…. ‘Woe to those who write the book with their own hands, and then say this is from Allah, to traffic with it for a miserable price. Woe to those for what they write. Woe to those for what they earn.’ Wa Aakim Dawana Anil Hamdulillahi Rabbil Aalameen.
Answer to Part 4: Mathematics and Conclusion
Let me summarize Janab Dr. Zakir Naik’s questions:
Question 16. Between Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7, there are at least 18 contradictions.
Question 17. If you add up Ezra, it does not come to 42,360 – it comes to 29,818 and if you add Nehemiah 7, even then it does not come to 42,360 – It comes to 31,089
Question 18. The singers list in Ezra 2 says 200, singers list in Nehemiah 7 says 245, which is correct?
Question 19 In 2 Kings 24, Jehoiachin was 18 years old, when he began to reign Jerusalem, and he reigned for 3 months. In 2nd Chronicles 36 says Jehoiachin was 8 years old when he began to reign and he reigned for 3 months, 10 days. Is it 8 or 18?
Question 20 Is it 3 months or 3 months and 10 days.
Question 21 1 Kings 7, in Solomon’s temple, in his molten sea, he had 2000 baths. In 2 Chronicles 4, he had 3000 baths. Did he have 2000 baths or did he have 3000 baths?
Question 22 1 Kings 15, ‘Basha, he died in the 26th year of reign of Asa.’ And 2 Chronicles 16, says that…‘Basha invaded Judah in the 36th years of the reign of Asa.’ How can Basha invade 10 years after his death?
Ezra and Nehemiah:
Question 16. Between Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7, there are at least 18 contradictions.
Question 17. If you add up Ezra, it does not come to 42,360 – it comes to 29,818 and if you add Nehemiah 7, even then it does not come to 42,360 – It comes to 31,089
Question 18. The singers list in Ezra 2 says 200, singers list in Nehemiah 7 says 245, which is correct?
In his over enthusiasm to find contradictions in the Holy Bible, Janab Dr. Zakir Naik, either intentionally or unintentionally overlooked the same chapter which he referred to Ezra 2.
Ezra 2:61-65, before it speaks about the whole company, says some were priests were excluded because they could not find their family records.
It could be one of the reasons for the differences in the list of other tribes as well – that some could not find their family records. That would make a difference in the total tally.
Further, Janab Dr. Zakir Naik also overlooked that both Ezra and Nehemiah are speaking about a migration.
Ezra did not come in the first migration. Nehemiah came along with the first migration. Therefore the theologians also point out that Ezra may have compiled a list of those who left Babylon with Zerubbabel or even those who enrolled to leave to Jerusalem, while Nehemiah compiled his list of those who actually made it to Jerusalem.
In fact, we should expect some differences between these two lists. There would be some dropouts and some additions.
Suppose if this was a registe
Question 17. If you add up Ezra, it does not come to 42,360 – it comes to 29,818 and if you add Nehemiah 7, even then it does not come to 42,360 – It comes to 31,089

Suppose if this was a registered program, the number of people who would enrol for this program, and the number of people would actually make for this program would be different. In fact, the number of people at the beginning of the program and at the end of the program would also be different. There would be some additions and dropouts.
Then, how much more in such a large migration.
Question 16. Between Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7, there are at least 18 contradictions.
Those are not contradictions sir. Those are differences between the initial list and the final list.
Question 17. If you add up Ezra, it does not come to 42,360 – it comes to 29,818 and if you add Nehemiah 7, even then it does not come to 42,360 – It comes to 31,089.
One of the reasons for not having the total tally is mentioned in Ezra 2:61-65. It is quite natural for those who do not have the family record not be included in the list.
The total is the total number of people, those who registered to go, those who
Question 18. The singers list in Ezra 2 says 200, singers list in Nehemiah 7 says 245, which is correct?
Once we understand the difference between the initial and final lists, the differences get automatically solved.
Now, the next four questions:
Whether Jehoiachin was 8 or 18 years, whether the molten sea in the Solomon’s temple had 2000 or 3000 baths, and whether Basha died in the 26th year of Asa, or he attacked Asa in the 36th year, is not very important.
For argument’s sake, I am granting that all of them are scribal errors. We Christians do not say that every scribe who copied the manuscripts was inspired or every typist who types the Holy Bible is inspired, we say every prophet who gave us the revelation was inspired.
None of these so-called contradictions have no impact on any of the doctrines of the Holy Bible. It does not affect the doctrine of God, doctrine of sin and salvation, or even other doctrines.
However, there are theologians who say that if you look at the historical context or analyse the language, all of these can be explained.
Let me answer these four examples.
Question 19: Was Jehoiachin 8 or 18 years when he started reigning.
Question 20: Did he reign for 3 months or 3 months and 10 days?
It could be that Jehoachin started as a co-ruler with his father at the age of 8 and became a ruler at 18 years. Co-regency could explain the difference.
3 months or 3 months and 10 days is the difference between exact number of days and rounding of numbers, which is an acceptable practice even now.
Question 21: The molten sea in Solomon’s temple, did it contain 2000 or 3000 baths of water?
The Hebrew verb rendered “contained” and “held” is different from that translated “received”; and the meaning may be that the sea ordinarily contained 2,000 baths. But when filled to its utmost capacity it received and held 3,000 baths. Thus the chronicler simply mentions the amount of water that would make the sea like a flowing spring rather than a still pool. This informs us that 3,000 gallons of water were required to completely fill the sea which usually held 2,000 gallons.
Question 22: Did Basha die in the 26th year of Asa or did he attack Asa in the 36th year.
2 Chronicles 16- in the 36th year of the reign of King Asa.
1 Kings 16- in the 26th year of Asa.
2 Chronicles 16, the Hebrew word used for reign used is Mal-Kut is often used for kingdom.
2 Chronicles 1:1- Now, Solomon, the son of David, was strengthened in his kingdom. The word of kingdom is the same word used.
2 Chronicles 11:17- So, they strengthened the kingdom of Judah.
2 Chronicles 20:30- And the fear of God was on all kingdoms of those countries.
Nehemiah 9:35- For they have not served You in their kingdom.
So, if it is the 36th year of Asa’s kingdom, we should count it from the time the kingdom was formed- the time when Southern Kingdom was distinguished from Northern Kingdom.
It would be 20 years before Asa became king. 36th year of Asa’s Kingdom, the southern kingdom would be 16th year of Asa’s rule. Then there is absolutely no contradiction.
Let me summarize questions and answers:
The first point was that -‘The creation of the Earth and the Heaven – the universe was in six, 24-hour days. Light was then before the source of light
Answer: Janab sir, first, Hazarat Muahmmad said world was created on days like Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc and the sun was created after trees and days existed. If Sunday, Monday, Tuesday can be long periods, definitely evening and morning can be figurative speeches.
The Hebrew word for “made for sun” is asah, which can mean appear as well.
Point No. 2. Three – Days came into existence before creation of Earth.
Answer: Sir, you are misrepresenting the Holy Bible. The Holy Bible says ‘in the beginning God created heavens and the earth. The third day was the separation of the dry land from waters.
Point No. 4 – Earth came into existence before Sun.
Answer:
Sir, by your own standards, you should not have quoted the theory of Big Bang as it is just a theory.
Again, your own prophet taught exactly the same thing in Sahih Muslim Hadith number 6707.
Point No. 5 – Vegetation came into existence, before sunlight.
If it is six literal days, it should not be a problem. Even if it is six long periods, there is a possibility of oxygenation to clear the sky and make sun appear as the word for made sun can mean appear as well.
Point No. 6 – Light of the Moon is its own light.
The Hebrew word ma’owr need not mean lamp having its own lights. Example Proverbs 15:30.
Further, Ezekiel 32: 7-8 and Matthew 24:29 clearly indicate that the moon light is reflected light.
Point No. 7 – The earth – Will it perish or will it abide forever?
The Hebrew word avad used in Psalms 102:25-26, can mean ruined. While the earth as entity would remain, the Holy Bible clearly teaches in 2 Peter 3:10-13- the present earth will be burned up and then we look forward the new earth.
In other words, these are in two different senses.
Point No. 8 – The earth has got pillars.
Answer: Yes, earth has got pillars as much as we say he/she is the pillar of our community.
The Bible clearly teaches in Job 26: 7 “He suspends the earth over nothing.”
Point No. 9 – The heavens have got pillars.
From the context, it was very clear that pillar refers to strength.
In fact, according to Tafsir attributed to Ibn Abbas, it is Quran which teaches that heavens have pillars which we cannot see in Surah 31: 10.
Point No. 10 – God said… ‘You can have all plants and all vegetation, including the poisonous plants?’
Answer: Sir, please read the context. It is speaking about the paradise.
Point No. 11 – The scientific test the falsification test, of Mark , Ch. No. 16, Verse No. 17 and 18.
Answer: The Holy Bible does not say that it is a ‘scientific test’ the Holy Bible very clearly teaches that those are gifts and promises of God.
Let Janab Dr. Zakir Naik eat seven ajwa dates according to Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 7, 664, 671 and drink poison and show us that Hazarat Muhammad’s medicine is correct.
Point No. 12 – A woman remains unclean for double the period, if she gives birth to a daughter, as compared to a son.
Answer: Religious reason is given in the Holy Bible itself. It is to encourage male circumcision on the eighth day and discourage female circumcision.
Anyone who thinks can find the social reason as well.
Point No. 13 – Using blood to disinfect the house, against plague of leprosy.
Answer: Janab Dr. Zakir Naik is totally misleading people here. The Holy Bible clearly commands to use the blood after the plague is healed.
The blood was used for atonement.
Point No. 14 – How do you find out the bitter water test for adultery?
Answer: The bitter water test is a supernatural judgement just as Muballah is a supernatural judgement. It was given in the Old Testament.
Point No. 15 – Eighteen different contradictions in less than 60 Verses of Ezra, Ch. 2, and Nehemiah, Ch. 7. I did not count them as 18 different – I counted them only as one.
Answer: Whether you count them as one or eighteen, once you take the context of migration and missing context into account, the count becomes none.
Point No. 16 – The total is different is both the chapters.
Answer: The total ought to be different considering that it is a migration and there were people who could not prove their family records.
Point No. 17 – Are there 200 singing men and women, or are there 245 singing men and women?
Answer: The difference is expected taking migration and family records into consideration.
Point No. 18 – Was Jehoiachin 18 years old, or was he 8 years old when he began to reign?
Answer: It could be the case of co-regency where Jehoiachin was a co-ruler at 8 and ruler at 18.
Point No. 19 – Did he reign for 3 months, or 3 months 10 days.
Answer: There is no contradiction here. It is just two ways of rounding the figures.
Point No. 20 – Did Solomon have 3000 baths, or 2000 baths?
The Hebrew verb rendered “contained” and “held” is different from that translated “received”; and the meaning may be that the sea ordinarily contained 2,000 baths. But when filled to its utmost capacity it received and held 3,000 baths.
Point No. 21 – Is that Basha, how could he invade Judah, 10 years after his death?
The Hebrew word that is used for reign used in 2 Chronicles 16, Mal-Kut is often used for kingdom. In other words, it means Asa’s Kingdom which would be the 16th year of Asa, 10 years before Basaha died.
Point No. 22 is – Almighty God – He said, I put up a rainbow in the sky, as a promise to the human kind, never to submerge the world again by water.
Answer: Set or put does not mean create. It means that rainbow has a new religious meaning to it.
Conclusion:
Janab Dr. Zakir Naik quoted
Surah 2: 79 and said “Woe to those who write the book with their own hands, and then say this is from Allah, to traffic with it for a miserable price. Woe to those for what they write. Woe to those for what they earn.”
But he did not quote Surah 2:78.
Surah 2: 78 it is a party of Jews and not all Jews. Why it is important?
Because Surah 3:113 very clearly says that ‘a party of them are not like that all.”
Second, Surah 2:78 does not say that a party of Jews have corrupted the scripture. But only that a party of them write something in addition. That might be about Talmud but not Torah.
I challenge Dawwah preachers to produce one unambiguous verse from the Quran which say that the Christians have corrupted their scriptures.
I challenge Dawwah preachers to produce one unambiguous verse from the Quran, which say that all Jews have corrupted their scriptures.
Further,
In Surah 5:44 Jews at the time of Muhammad, are asked to judge by their scriptures.
In Surah 5:47 Christians, at the time of Muhammad, are asked to judge by the Injil, the Gospels.
If the Torah and Injil have been already corrupted, why would Muhammad ask Jews and Christians to judge by them?
In Surah 28:48-49 Allah challenges the unbelievers to bring a book which is a better guide than either Torah or Quran.
These days Muslims cite only the verses which say that produce a book like Quran.
But in Surah 28:48-49 the challenge is actually to produce a book better than Torah or Quran.
If the Torah was already corrupted, why would Allah challenge people to produce a book like Torah? The challenge would be then meaningless.
Further, it is the fourth article of faith for every Muslim to believe in all the books revealed to prophets.
How are they supposed to believe in it? They are supposed to believe just as Muhammad believed. Not as any Dawwah preacher believed in it.
How did Muhammad believe?
In Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 38, Number 4434: Muhammad asked Jews to bring the Torah. When the Jews bought the Torah, Muhammad placed it on a cushion and said “I believed in thee and in Him Who revealed thee.”
Surah 4: 136 says that those who deny the books, they have gone far far astray.
Do I need to say anything more about Janab Dr. Zakir Naik?
I would like to conclude by saying:
Psalms 119: 140 “Your word is very pure; Therefore Your servant loves it.”
Psalms 119: 160 “The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.”
